Novel Analysis Method for Optical Packet Switching Nodes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Packet and burst switching have been proposed for optical networks because they can better accommodate bursty traffic generated by IP applications. In optical packet switching networks the payload and the header of the same packet are conveyed in the same channel, while burst switching networks allow the separate transportation of the payload and the header of the same burst. In this paper we consider an optical packet switching node that assigns arriving packets to channels in a link with available data channels (wavelengths) and a buffer of size. The paper applies the novel MM /GE/c/L G-queue to model optical packet switching nodes. It is worth emphasizing that our method can be applied to model burst switching nodes as well. Moreover, we show that a model previously presented in the literature is only the special case of our model. Numerical results quantitatively demonstrate that the characteristics (e.g.: burstiness) of the offered traffic have a significant impact on the performance of optical nodes.

Department of Electrical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, P.O. Box 513, 5600 MB Eindhoven, The Netherlands Abstract It is widely recognized that all-optical packet switched telecommunication nodes require a form of all-optical buffering and synchronization to avoid congestion in the switching matrix . We present a novel all-optical switching concept suitable for these purposes...
متن کاملA new framework and burst assembly for IP DiffServ over optical burst switching networks
Differentiated Services (DiffServ) has been standardized by the IETF and is considered as a promising IP QoS solution due to its scalability and ease of implementation. In this paper, we present a novel framework for IP Differentiated Services (DiffServ) over optical burst switching (OBS), namely, DS-OBS. We present the network architecture, functional model of edge nodes and core nodes, the co...
